This service assesses whether children are growing up in a safe environment and evaluates parenting capacity and competency.

How does parenting assessment and skill development services work?

Parent assessment and skill development services are a targeted service provided to vulnerable children who Child Protection are supporting.

The services are home-based or provided in a community residential setting and involve an assessment of an infant's wellbeing. It also assesses the parents capacity to care for, and protect this infant. 

The service assessments are used by Child Protection and the Children's Court to inform their decision making. They also help to ensure appropriate supports are provided to children and their families. These services also include an intensive education and skill development component for parents.

Who can access the service?

Vulnerable children (generally from birth to two years, but can be inclusive of three year old children) are referred directly to a parent assessment and skill development service through regional child protection programs.
